Quick start

A few simple tests can be carried out before calling a service engineer.

Check the brake lever
Make sure that the free-wheel brake lever is in the the drive position, in this position the scooter cannot be pushed along. Turn the scooter off and on, then test the scooter again. Electric wheelchairs and powerchairs will have two free-wheel brake levers, both need to be in the the drive position.

Clean the wireless contacts
Particularly with portable scooters and powerchairs, whilst assembling, you may have noticed there are 3 or 4 electrical contacts on each side of the connecting pieces. These contacts need to be cleaned periodically to remove any grease, grit or oxidisation. The tiniest piece of grit on one contact could be the problem. Fully disassemble the scooter, clean the contacts, there are usually 14 on a typical boot scooter but there could be more.

Unlocking a powerchair
To prevent unauthorized use, a joystick can be locked and unlocked with a sequence of key presses and joystick movements. If your powerchair or electric wheelchair will not move and the led indicator displays as if it is charging, then it is likely to be locked. Find the operating manual for your joystick controller online eg PGDrives VR2 Controller to find out how to unlock your joystick.
